AI-Powered Posture Coaching with Wearable Sensors

We built a proprietary IoT sensor app and AI algorithm to track the posture and movement of ballet dancers in real time and deliver instant feedback to a mobile phone. Multiple body-mounted sensors stream motion data to the app, where our models reconstruct posture, detect deviations from desired technique and suggest precise corrections directly to the dancer and coach.

Instead of relying solely on mirrors, video replays or occasional coaching cues, dancers can now see and feel how their posture evolves during every rehearsal and exercise. The system transforms abstract biomechanical data into intuitive insights: angles, symmetry, balance and stability – all visualised in a way that supports artistic expression rather than fighting it.

Beyond ballet, the same core technology applies to sports where posture is critical: gymnastics, golf, rowing, climbing, martial arts and more. The wearable platform becomes a digital coach that helps athletes protect their bodies, refine technique and track progress over time.

 

What this solves

Posture-intensive disciplines like ballet and many sports depend on tiny adjustments that are hard to see and even harder to feel consistently. Coaches can’t watch every athlete from every angle, all the time. Athletes get limited, subjective feedback, and minor errors can build into injuries or bad habits. Traditional motion capture systems are expensive, fixed in a lab and not suitable for everyday training.

Our solution brings lab-grade insight into regular training sessions. The wearable sensors capture 3D motion data from key body segments, and our AI models translate this into KPIs such as joint angles, alignment, symmetry, stability and smoothness of movement. On the phone, dancers and athletes see real-time posture indicators, traffic-light style warnings and simple dashboards showing how their technique changes across sessions. This closes the feedback loop, supports safer training and helps coaches focus on higher-level artistic and tactical work.

 

How we did it

We designed a lightweight, wireless wearable system with multiple sensors attached to key points on the body (e.g. torso, legs, arms), streaming data to a mobile app via Bluetooth. A custom data pipeline cleans and synchronises sensor streams, then feeds them into AI models trained to reconstruct posture, identify key phases of movement and detect deviations from target patterns.

On the app side, we implemented real-time visual cues and summaries tailored for dancers and coaches: posture score per exercise, symmetry metrics, range-of-motion trends and alerts when predefined thresholds are exceeded. Session data is stored securely for longitudinal analysis, enabling comparisons between sessions, tracking of fatigue and identification of recurring risk patterns. The architecture is flexible enough to be retuned for other posture-driven sports by updating sensor placement, movement templates and domain-specific KPIs.
