AI Satellite Image Classification for Environmental Monitoring

The challenge
Satellites photograph the planet every day, but there are far too many images to check by hand. Changes on the ground, in water, vegetation or land use, are spotted late or not at all.

What we built
We built AI models that classify satellite images automatically, labelling land cover such as water, vegetation and built-up areas, and flagging where it changes over time.

The results feed maps and alerts, so teams look only at the places that matter. The system is a validated prototype and the base of our in-house Space work.

Business value

  • Large areas monitored automatically
  • Changes spotted early, not months later
  • The same classification rules across every image
  • Maps and alerts ready for decision makers

Where else it applies
The same approach transfers to agriculture, forestry, insurance, urban planning, and disaster response. It belongs to our Real-Time Intelligence work: data analysed as it happens, with alerts when something needs attention, instead of reports that arrive too late.

Task

Turn daily satellite images into clear environmental signals.
